How to Set Up AI Customer Support for Your Shopify Store
Published on by Antoni
The Shopify Support Problem
Shopify stores get the same questions over and over. "Where is my order?" "What's your return policy?" "Does this come in size XL?" "How long does shipping take?"
These questions are answerable — your policies are written down, your product specs are on your pages, your FAQs cover the basics. But customers can't find the answers fast enough, so they email you. And you (or someone on your team) types the same reply for the 100th time.
AI support eliminates this. A properly configured AI chat widget answers these questions instantly, at 2am, on every product page, without any human involvement. Here's how to set it up for Shopify in about 30 minutes.
What AI Can (and Can't) Handle for Shopify
AI handles well:
- Shipping times ("Standard shipping takes 5–7 business days")
- Return policies ("You can return unworn items within 30 days")
- Product questions ("This jacket runs true to size; for athletic builds, size up")
- Order status explanations ("Once your order ships, you'll get a tracking email within 24 hours")
- Size guides ("Our size chart: S fits 34–36 chest, M fits 37–39...")
- FAQ-type questions ("Yes, we ship internationally to 40+ countries")
AI needs human backup for:
- Specific order lookups ("My order #12345 hasn't arrived")
- Refund processing ("I want to initiate a return")
- Damaged or wrong items received
- Payment issues
- Anything requiring access to your Shopify admin
The goal isn't full automation — it's handling the 60–70% of questions that have fixed answers, so you can focus on the 30–40% that need human judgment.
Step 1: Create Your FutureBase Agent
Sign up at FutureBase and create a new AI agent. During setup, enter your Shopify store URL (e.g., yourstore.myshopify.com or your custom domain).
FutureBase will start crawling your store automatically — product pages, collections, FAQs, blog posts — and index them as knowledge. This typically takes 5–15 minutes depending on store size.
Step 2: Import Your Key Store Content
While the auto-crawl runs, manually add your most important content:
Shipping Policy
Add your full shipping policy page URL under Content → Custom URLs. Or paste it directly as a document. Make sure it includes:
- Domestic shipping times and costs
- International shipping availability
- Expected processing time before shipment
- Carrier names (FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc.)
Return Policy
Same approach. Include:
- Return window (e.g., 30 days)
- Condition requirements (unworn, tags attached)
- How to initiate a return (email, form, in-app)
- Refund timeline
Size Guides
If you have size charts, add them explicitly. Size questions are among the highest-volume pre-purchase questions for fashion and apparel stores. A clear, complete size guide in the AI's knowledge dramatically reduces these tickets.
Step 3: Create FAQ Entries for Policy-Critical Questions
FAQ entries in FutureBase are "pinned" answers — when the customer asks a matching question, the AI responds with your exact text, not a generated interpretation. Use these for anything where paraphrasing could create a liability or a confused customer.
Recommended Shopify FAQ entries:
- "What is your return policy?" → [your exact return policy text]
- "How long does shipping take?" → [exact shipping timeline by region]
- "Do you ship internationally?" → [countries + costs]
- "How do I return an item?" → [step-by-step return instructions]
- "What happens if I receive a damaged item?" → [your damaged item process]
- "Can I change or cancel my order?" → [your cancellation window and instructions]
- "Do you offer exchanges?" → [your exchange policy]
These 7 entries alone will deflect a large fraction of your inbound messages.
Step 4: Configure Escalation for Order-Specific Questions
Customers will ask things like "Where is my order?" or "My package was delivered to the wrong address." The AI can't look up specific orders — but it can handle these gracefully.
In FutureBase, set up an escalation message for order-specific requests:
"For questions about a specific order, please email [[email protected]] with your order number and we'll get back to you within 24 hours. Alternatively, you can check your order status in your confirmation email using the tracking link."
This turns a frustrated "I can't get a human" moment into a helpful handoff.
Step 5: Install the Widget on Shopify
Option A: Add to theme.liquid (recommended)
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes
- Click Actions → Edit Code on your current theme
- In the Layout folder, open theme.liquid
- Find
</body>(near the bottom of the file) - Paste your FutureBase snippet just before it:
<script src="https://embed.futurebase.io/widget.js" data-wid="YOUR_WIDGET_ID"></script>
</body>
- Click Save
The widget will appear on every page of your store immediately.
Option B: Use a Custom HTML block
If you don't want to edit theme files, you can add the script via a custom HTML section in Shopify's theme editor. Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize and add a Custom HTML block to your footer section.
Step 6: Customize the Widget Appearance
In FutureBase, go to Widget → Appearance:
- Brand color — use your store's primary color (Shopify's color picker has your hex code under Online Store → Themes → Colors)
- Widget position — bottom-right is standard; bottom-left if you have other elements there
- Welcome message — "Hi! Have a question about your order or our products?" works well for e-commerce
- Agent name — use your store name + "Support" (e.g., "Acme Support")
Step 7: Test Before Your Next Traffic Spike
Before a sale event (Black Friday, product launch, seasonal promo), test your AI with these questions:
- "What is your return policy?"
- "How long does shipping take to California?"
- "Do you ship to Canada?"
- "My order hasn't arrived yet — what do I do?"
- "Does this [product] come in size Large?"
- "Can I exchange this for a different color?"
- "How do I track my order?"
For each, verify: Is the answer accurate? Is it complete? Does it match your actual policies exactly?
Scale-Season Prep: What to Do Before Peak Traffic
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and holiday season generate 2–10x normal support volume. AI handles this without degradation — but your knowledge base needs to be ready.
Before a sale event:
- Update your FAQ entries to reflect sale-specific policies (e.g., "Sale items are final sale")
- Add a FAQ for "I placed an order during the sale — when will it ship?" with your fulfillment timeline
- Add any new shipping carriers or changes to shipping windows during peak season
- Add a FAQ for gift shipping (gift notes, gift wrap options, gift receipts)
On the day:
- Monitor your AI conversation dashboard for any new question patterns
- Add FAQ entries in real-time for anything the AI is missing
- Keep your escalation path clear (email or human agent) for order-specific issues
Measuring Success
Track these metrics in your FutureBase dashboard:
| Metric | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Deflection rate | 50–70% for e-commerce |
| First-response resolution | >60% of conversations resolved in 1 AI reply |
| Escalation rate | Under 30% escalate to email/human |
| Customer ratings | >75% thumbs up on AI responses |
If deflection rate is below 40% after 2 weeks, audit your escalated conversations — there will be a pattern of questions the AI is missing. Add FAQ entries or update your shipping/return policy docs to cover them.
Common Mistakes Shopify Stores Make
Not adding the return policy as explicit FAQs. The auto-crawl will find your policy page, but for precise questions like "Can I return sale items?" the AI needs an exact FAQ entry, not a crawled paraphrase.
Leaving the widget on checkout pages. Distract customers mid-purchase and you'll lose conversions. In FutureBase, add /checkout to your URL exclusion list.
Not updating the AI after a policy change. If you change your return window or shipping carrier, update your FAQ entries the same day. Stale answers are worse than no AI.
Using generic welcome messages. "Hi! How can I help?" works fine. "Hi! Looking for size advice, shipping info, or product details? Ask me anything." works better — it primes customers to use the widget for the right questions.
